Founded in 1782 as the Mission San Buenaventura, the city was influenced by members of the Chumash, Spanish Mexico, and Chinese communities, as well as many others. It has a diverse cultural heritage as identified by the blend of art and architecture found thought the city.
Once owned by Mexico and nestled by the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains in the Oxnard Plain, Ventura grew to become an agricultural center by the mid 1800's and had an oil boom in the early 1900's. The historic Downtown is home to some of the area's original adobes.
